Amy Scherzer's Diary: Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla debs, LifePath Hospice Women gift

LifePath Hospice Women of Philanthropy

Recent gender and philanthropy studies show women to be more generous and more involved with charitable giving than men are. That doesn't surprise LifePath Hospice Women of Philanthropy, a newly organized group that will combine its annual donations to invest in one significant hospice project each year.

The steering committee, including Valerie Clark DiGennaro, Kelly Panter, Jo Deck, Trish Melech, Lara White, Diane Taylor, Cathy Smith and 25 others met Nov. 12 to hear about three worthy programs during lunch at Oxford Exchange. The vote for the 2013 joint contribution was close. The inaugural recipient, Camp Circle of Love, will get a substantial check to make a video about the weekend grief camp for children and teens.

Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla debutante ball

"Watch your step ... it's a long way," advised Pirate Haynes Hendry to daughter Amanda, 20, as she prepared to make her formal debut to Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. The University of Central Florida real estate major understood that Dad was referring to adulthood, not the raised runway in the Marriott Waterside ballroom.

Amanda Hendry and 30 other college sophomores and juniors sparkled in long white gowns and long white gloves offset by red rose bouquets. Presenters, fathers or sponsors in white-tie and tails escorted them to the 99th court of Gasparilla King David Straz Jr. and Queen Elizabeth Lykes Carrere. En route, guests heard their academic achievements (26 graduated from Plant High), career goals and krewe family trees. Capt. James Von Thron hosted Thanksgiving Eve, assisted by Pirates Calvin Hayes, William A. Cassidy and Jeffrey Annis.

The debutantes curtsied to their mothers, then the court. Their majesties concluded with a Grand March played by the Ward Cook Orchestra. Debs waltzed first with their dads, next their eager escorts, then slipped off to the after-party in another part of the hotel.
