Home is Where the Heart Is holiday stroll

It was her seventh "Home is Where the Heart Is" Holiday Stroll, and Dottie Berger MacKinnon wasn't about to miss it. She is the founder of the annual Davis Islands walking cocktail party and its beneficiary, Kids Charity of Tampa Bay. No blood transfusion was keeping her away, she told the 200 guests who were surprised and thrilled when she and hubby Sandy MacKinnon arrived Dec. 9.

"I told (the Tampa General Hospital medical staff) if they didn't take out the tubes, I was pulling them out myself," said Dottie, a cancer patient for 18 months.

She missed hors d'oeuvres by Metro Chef at Siri and Bernard Rock's on Adalia Avenue, but caught up at Laura and Ben West's for Tastes of Tampa Bay's roast beef, pork tenderloin and more. Then saxophonist Gene Cannon tooted everyone down the block to the artful home of Linda Karson and Richard Lehfeldt for desserts by ACI Personal Chef Services. A holiday songfest erupted around pianist Lehfeldt while DeDe Grundel led others out to the waterfront dance floor.

St. Joseph's Children's Hospital's Celebrity Holiday Fashion Show

Georgette's Boutique glammed the runway with festive fashions for New Year's Eve and beyond, in Times Square or Tampa. "Holidays in New York" showed off media, sports and medical celebs, Sex and the City-style, for St. Joseph's Children's Hospital supporters. Event Show Productions' dancing snow bunnies, Rockettes and Hanukkah rapper steamed up the Hyatt Regency Tampa when the models scooted off to change. Amanda Mason, 21, stunning in a black gown with diamond cuffs, sang an aria from La Boheme. The Robinson High grad, is the daughter of event co-chairwoman Wanda Mason and BayCare Health System CEO Steve Mason.

WFLA-Ch. 8's Gayle Sierens anchored the Dec. 7 luncheon for the 700 guests, with an emotional boost from Deanna Bayless, mother of patient Emily, 7. Jack Harris auctioned two New York trips, among other items, and the committee-made Christmas wreaths sold fast, all helping the event net more than $60,000.

Red Cross Gingerbread House decorating brunch

And the winner is … everyone who came to the Red Cross Gingerbread House decorating brunch at the University of Tampa on Saturday. Gina Sierra-Townsend won Best in Show; Sonnia Spoto got the most votes to win People's Choice. Beverly Austin earned Best Red Cross house while mother and daughter Lisa and Brittany Lee Garcia teamed up to win Best Group theme.

But if you ask "fairy and princess" gingerbread house designers Mya, 6, and Avery Metheny, 4, and their mom, Lisa, they'll say they won, for "having the most fun of the year."

The 200 gingerbread artists also shopped a lobby that was full of vendors, including Lovin' Oven cookies made by attorney/baker Nancy Jacob, helping event chairwoman Brandy McClarin net $20,000.
