If the city of St. Petersburg addresses the security concerns and other issues that have plagued BayWalk, residents who want to see the retail complex and downtown sparkle even more should speak loudly with their patronage.

Yes, there are other areas of the city that need continued attention, but BayWalk's demise will serve no one.

Protesters, in and of themselves, shouldn't drive people away. Take a stand or risk granting them more power. …

It wasn't surprising to see U.S. Rep. and U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek opening a field office in Tampa on Wednesday. It was surprising to see the Miami native opening an office 15 months before the general election. Clearly, Meek has the funds to fuel an ambitious approach. …

The outcry about University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer's new $24 million contract needs to be balanced with the money he generates for the school, and it was nice to hear he plans to give $1 million a year back to UF. But if I'm Meyer, I go a step further. Get with basketball coach Billy Donovan and leverage those dollars with a fundraising campaign for the institution — not the athletic department. …

The National Association of Black Journalists is holding its national convention in Tampa this week, and the local chapter makes the most of the occasion Friday with the Beach Jam at the Florida Aquarium.
