EAST LAKE — Authorities removed more than 120 small-breed dogs from what Pinellas sheriff's officials described as deplorable conditions at a home in the county's north end Monday afternoon.

Sheriff's deputies, an inspector from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and representatives from the nonprofit Suncoast Animal League visited the property at 339 Ranch Road, south of Keystone Road and east of East Lake Road.

"It's a very nice home, but it reeked with a smell; and when you went back into a couple of the rooms, it knocked you out," said Rick Chaboudy of the Suncoast Animal League. "No animal should be forced to live like that, and it's not healthy for this person to go back in there. It's pretty nasty."

Deputies will conduct an animal neglect investigation and the matter will be referred to the State Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed against Teresita Hughes, 69, the owner of the home and a dog breeder.

Most of the dogs taken were Pomeranians, but there were also some Yorkshire terriers and Maltese. Some of the dogs had broken legs, while others were undernourished and had sores from living in wire cages.

The injured dogs were taken to emergency animal clinics. The others will be given to local shelters, sheriff's officials said.

According to deputies, there were two to eight dogs packed into each wire cage.

Deputies say most of the animals were living in their own feces and urine. In addition, the food in the crates contained feces, and the dogs had no opportunity for exercise.

Hughes allowed the deputies into her home Monday and told them she had 67 animals.

"Hughes said she has been a breeder for 15 years and has had no problems," Chaboudy said.

"We deal with hoarders a lot, but this is the first time I've dealt with the huge number of animals from a puppy mill situation."

Poor, poor babies. My heart breaks for these pups. These breeders should be outlawed. We would love to adopt a fur baby for a playmate for our Maltese princess.

Angie - she's not doing good. These animals have been neglected & treated to horrific conditions! Hoarding is a disease and she needs help & jail. Unfortunately all of these adorable dogs paid the price. I have 3 dogs 'cuz I kn

They are blowing things out of proportion, half of you should know. You people should try takeing care of that many dogs and see how hard it is but still worth while to know your doing some good and giving these dogs a new home so EAT IT!

I hope they put her in a small cell with 120 other people and see how she likes it. Why can't this be made a felony crime? This is happening every day someplace in this country and we do nothing to stop it. These people should go to jail.

RE: Sue's Comment about the neighbors....i am a neighbor and didn't know she owned 1 dog let alone 120...the lots on ranch rd are five acres and the property in question has a vacant 5 acre lot next to it with dense cypress stand...don'

Does this woman actually live in the house also? Is she mentally diminishing?
by Tiffany Apr 8, 2008 2:42 PM
Dogs are not adoptable at this point. Because this is part of a criminal trial they will not be adoptable until after the case against the owner/breeder is decided
by Haven Apr 8, 2008 2:41 PM
Our legislators must do something about this puppy mill problem. It should be made a felony and the owners should be sent to prison. Please lawmakers - if you're out there - pay attention!

How can we adopt these dogs? I see others have asked the same question with no response. I would think if you ask for comments they responses would be made.
by Joanne Apr 8, 2008 1:47 PM
When you think of dogs as a commodity, it does not matter how many you stuff into a cramped cage. The only thing that matters is the almighty dollar and it is a sad commentary on humanity. Hope more people report these unscrupulous backyard breeder
by Maggie Apr 8, 2008 1:37 PM
WHO finally turned her in? Someone who bought a sick puppy?
by heather Apr 8, 2008 1:27 PM
does anyone have any information about how to adopt these puppies?
by Beth Apr 8, 2008 1:27 PM
I want one of them puppies.
by Sue Apr 8, 2008 1:27 PM
I cannot believe the neighbors never said anything...wouldn't it bother you if you heard 120 dogs barking...or the smell...I have a pom that I rescued from the humane society...I will be going back...
by Carmen Apr 8, 2008 1:02 PM
Just unbelievable....I get tears in my eyes just thinking of what these puppies went through...what cruelty. I would love to adopt one of the Pommerianians
by Dolly Apr 8, 2008 12:51 PM
Hopefully this will be yet another wake up call. Do not buy puppies from newspaper ads, pet shops, etc, while shelter dogs die. Please rescue a dog today so we may stop this. The Fairgrounds is having a Pet Adoption this Sat rescues/shelter dogs.

Sounds like a residential puppy mill. The filth, stench and disregard people will tolerate to make a buck. "Book 'em Danno!" - Cruelty one.
by Laura Apr 8, 2008 12:20 PM
Some of the puppies are at the kennel that I work at. They are in horrible condition. Our dog groomers are volunteering to groom some of the puppies that we have. They are all purebred pommeranians, yorkies and malteses.
by Mary Hunter Apr 8, 2008 11:35 AM
There are too many breeders out there that have animals under this type of living conditions. This person needs to spend time in prison. STOP these puppy mills!!!!
by rhonda Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
very sad. put her in a cage and lock her up. I hope all the dogs are ok.
by MIRANDA Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
I want one!
by Dave Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
Mistreatment of animals, murders, and pedopheliac teachers are what Tampa Bay should be known for, apparently.
by Holly Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
Didn't understand the real magnitude of this problem until I watched Oprah's show regarding "puppy mills." Shameful; these folks should receive jail time and a life time of counseling!
by Kate Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
What. A. Jerk. SOMEBODY need to make her live in her potty, just like she made her dogs do!!! Give her rotten food and no water and see how she likes it. People like this make me sick.
by steve Apr 8, 2008 11:34 AM
Right on Louise. Make people who breed pets for money register with the fish and game and make them licensed and subject to regular inspections
by Alicia Apr 8, 2008 11:06 AM
Lets Make her live in deplorable conditions and let her sleep in her own feces without food. Worthless Scum Bag of a Human!!!
by louise Apr 8, 2008 10:33 AM
the state needs to issue a moratorium on breeding licenses. every day animals are killed at shelters. breeding makes NO sense!
by Mikie Apr 8, 2008 10:33 AM
Take her house and sell it to pay for all the dogs care. Put her in a CRAPPY retirement home! Give all her money to the shelters. There are many more like her out there.
by Kelly Apr 8, 2008 9:13 AM
Probably sold the puppies online. Always know where your puppy was born and bred.
by Kelly Apr 8, 2008 8:59 AM
What a horrible story...what is wrong with these people and why do we keep hearing these things. Don't they have any friends or family to step in and say ENOUGH already?
by Linda Apr 8, 2008 8:56 AM
This is deplorable! How can someone "interbreed" is a better description, for so many years under these conditions, and get away with it for so long! If one needs a home let me know and I'll come get her.
by Adam Apr 8, 2008 8:50 AM
Lock this woman in a 4'x4' cage and make her live in her own feces and urine. "to determine if criminal charges will be filed" why is she not in jail yet and what question is there to determine if criminal charges should be filed
by Susan Apr 8, 2008 8:43 AM
Her license was revoked by AKC. Why didnt AKC raise red flags? They are worthless.
