EAST TAMPA

Fair Oaks park opens

Fair Oaks Pond is officially open. Mayor Pam Iorio met with members of the community last week to unveil the site's transformation from a 2.6-acre stormwater runoff collection into a mini park with a pond and fountain.

The city teamed up with the East Tampa Community Revitalization Partnership in November 2007 to add a paved walking path, benches, a gazebo and native plants to the pond. It is across from the Fair Oaks Playground at 34th and Caracas streets.

The total cost was a little over $800,000, which came from the Tax Increment Fund.

Linda Carlo, spokeswoman for the city parks department, said the next two stormwater pond sites will be on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and on 22nd Street between Chelsea Street and Osbourne Avenue, near Middleton High School.

Contractors Gibbs & Register were hired to build all three ponds.

DAVIS ISLANDS

Park fund input sought

The city of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department is holding a community meeting to gather input on the Davis Islands Park Improvement Fund at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Sandra Freedman Tennis Complex at 59 Columbia Drive.

Committee member Charner Reese said the meeting will include discussion of the allocation of a $1-million donation from Tampa General Hospital, which she said will go to a study on restoring Jenkins Pool and a paved trail near Seaplane Basin Park.

The meeting is open to the public. For information, contact the Parks Department at 274-8615.

GANDY/SUN BAY SOUTH

Lois turn lane restored

A little update from Al Steenson, president of the Gandy/Sun Bay South Civic Association, on the ongoing efforts to fix up Gandy Boulevard:

The left turn lane at Lois Avenue has been restored, allowing motorists to turn north and south onto the road.

Also, on the north side of the road, lanes have been paved from Church Street to West Shore Boulevard.

Steenson says in an e-mail that the project is on schedule and is expected to be complete by winter 2009.

PALMETTO BEACH

Association to meet

The Palmetto Beach Community Association will host its general meeting at 6:15 p.m., Tuesday in the Desoto Park Main Pavilion at 2617 E Corrine St.

City Council member Tom Scott will be the guest speaker. All residents are welcome.
