LAND O'LAKES — Ten-year-old Austin Carter would hold up Sunday school class to save lizards that wandered into the room. He worried the creatures missed their families.

Earlier this year, Austin revived a nonbreathing newborn puppy. He had a reputation for rescuing hurt kittens, bunnies, even insects.

Austin died Monday from injuries suffered in a weekend go-cart wreck. Even after death, he's still rescuing.

"We donated his organs and he already saved six kids' lives," said his father, Rhett Carter, 36. "I know this is what he wanted."

Friends teased Austin, a fifth-grader at Pine View Elementary, because his fingernails were always dirty. He loved the outdoors, and even as a kid, was an avid hunter and fisherman.

"He was all boy," said Tonya Stout, 42, director of the children ministry at First United Methodist Church, where the Carters attended service.

Sunday afternoon, after church and the family grocery shopping trip, Austin, his 8-year-old sister, Brianna, and stepbrother, Colin Harbaugh, 14, went with a group of neighborhood kids to a nearby field for an afternoon of off-road riding.

Rhett Carter had just settled down to watch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Green Bay Packers when his daughter and a neighbor rushed into the house.

"They told me Austin was knocked out," Carter said Tuesday.

Austin hit his head on a concrete pole after he lost control of his go-cart, which was being pulled by an all-terrain vehicle driven by a 14-year-old neighbor, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

He was not wearing protective gear.

Austin was pronounced brain dead around noon Monday.

"He'll be greatly missed," said Pine View Elementary principal Cortney Gantt. "He was just one of those all-around good, kind kids."

Grief counselors helped Pine View students and teachers deal with the loss Tuesday.

Students in his sister Brianna's third-grade class decorated cards and were given etiquette lessons on the types of questions to ask when she returns to school.

Tuesday afternoon, Rhett and Natalie Carter's Ehren Cutoff home was filled with friends, family and well-wishers.

"It helps a lot," Carter said.

The company distracted the family from dwelling on Austin's toys that were scattered about the house. He was supposed to clean his room Sunday.

The family has not made funeral arrangements. They imagine a service will be held sometime this weekend.

In the meantime, the Carters feel peace at the thought of strangers benefiting from their son's donated organs.

"He was the most caring, loving and full of life child you would ever know," his mom, Natalie, wrote in an e-mail to the Times. "He was truly our angel and is now giving the gift of life to other families."

To Natalie, Rhett, and Brianna-- when I think of Austin I remember a child who loved reading books, interacting with other children, and really loved those bugs:) He will be greatly missed!

Oh when the bugs come out in spring Oh when the bugs come out in spring I want to be outside watching When the bugs come out in spring I'll see some crawl; I'll see some fly I'll count how many go marching by I'll watch and see how many I know

I can't believe the comments from those mean-spirited, holier-than-thou types who have made such terrible comments, and trying to place blame where none exists. These are two wonderful, caring parents who have lost a son, people.

Gina and family, we, at Nature Coast, send our prayers to your family during this time. What a precious boy. We pray God will give you peace.

The Carters are loving and responsible parents who are raising their children to care about others, as Austin did. This was a tragic accident that fulfilled God's plan to save 6 others. God bless the Carters, their families, and Austin's memory.
by KATY Oct 2, 2008 9:23 AM
I am sorry for the tragic ending, but this was a preventable and senseless death. Parents- take control of your children's activities- this family lost their precious cargo needlessly. A go cart pulled by an ATV is an accident waiting to happen!!!

Austin was my cousin and one of my favorite cousins at that...he had the sweetest smile, and he was truely an angel! God needed another angel to watch over us so he chose Austin! Everyone has their own opinions but I do not blame my cousins.
by Lisa Oct 2, 2008 9:23 AM
So sorry for this families loss..We cannot put a bubble around our children, I often watch my kids play and hope they dont get hurt but it happens even when being supervised.

The whole over 40 crowd NEVER knew what a helmet was as a kid. Accidents happen. Just because your kid doesn't wear a helmet doesn't mean the parents loved him any less then helmited kids parents. M&D - DON'T BLAME YOURSELF!! His life is carried on!!
by Jimmy Oct 1, 2008 2:51 PM
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We love you and will honor Austin's memory and praise his wonderful gift forever.
by aunt gina Oct 1, 2008 2:48 PM
to mel, lifelink does let the family know where the donations are going before the surgery, they don't disclose names. so you need to get your facts straight before you comment on them. From his angry aunt
by Cindy Oct 1, 2008 2:25 PM

by Titus Oct 1, 2008 1:20 PM
Some of you are so mean. Boys will be boys, nobody can watch over 24/7, and some things are shared right away. Ithelps the family to know they have a direct, immediate impact on others. Deepest sympathy...
by Lucia Oct 1, 2008 1:19 PM
Just pray for this dear little boy's family instead of piling blame and guilt on them. How cruel and judgemental of some people who post here!
by Bobby! Oct 1, 2008 1:19 PM
The comments made by Lisa,John and David make me sick!! I work with his father and have known them for 12 years. They are very responsible and loving parents. Accidents happen thats why they are called accidents. people should think before they speak
by alfred Oct 1, 2008 1:19 PM
hey david..if you hate to say it..then don't say it..your playing the blame game..
by Mel Oct 1, 2008 9:32 AM
Very sorry for their loss, but lifelink doesn't disclose anything about lives being save, 1 day after a death and donation. Sorry times investigate the truth before printing.
by Carolyn Oct 1, 2008 9:32 AM
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this precious child. May your memories bring you comfort as your son watches over you from heaven and know that he lives on through others with your thought gift. God Bless Austin, may he rest in peace.
by jay Oct 1, 2008 9:32 AM
There are no words of comfort for this family, only know that your family and Austin are in my prayers. What a wonderful thing that Austin was able to help other people even in his death. He is surely with God.
by Katy Oct 1, 2008 9:30 AM
My niece is one of the people you helped save. She is currently undergoing a 14 hour multiple organ transplant in Miami. We will forever be grateful to you for your generosity. Your family is in our prayers.

by Anita Oct 1, 2008 9:29 AM
My first thought when looking at the picture, was what a precious loving boy! Then my heart was broken to read he had passed on. Then I began to realize he is an angel and hope we will be blessed to meet him one day!! God Bless his precious soul.
