Colorful reminders to all who are free

The American Legion post at 3810 W Kennedy Blvd. is gaining eye-catching, patriotic flair, thanks to the skills of local artist Heather Tabman. Tom Kester, first vice commander of American Legion USS Tampa Post 5, said the murals depict Flanders Fields, on the right, and an American eagle with a flag and an olive branch. The scene of Flanders Fields, a World War I battle site and graveyard in Belgium, honors the 736 graves that are on the property of Post 5. The eagle "is much like the Bayshore Patriots with their flags, except this one is always going to be there," said Kester, who has waved flags on Bayshore Boulevard many time with the Patriots. Tabman designed the murals with guidance from the American Legion post. An arts grant paid for the work.
