Cyclists to ride for 'oil independence'

DOWNTOWN — Bicyclists will meet at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for two rides on Sunday to celebrate the Fourth of July.

With the goal to encourage people to commute by bike, the "Declare Your Independence from Oil" rides are sponsored by local cycling advocates and the South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers.

One ride is 11 miles; the other 24. Both will travel at a 12- to 14-mile-per-hour pace and take cyclists along Bayshore Boulevard. Both rides are free and start at 8 a.m. Riders should arrive at the park between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m.
