First baby of 2014 comes to Tampa General Hospital

TAMPA — Thirty-three minutes into 2014, Aileen Capula Martinez was born at Tampa General Hospital and is believed to be the first local baby of the new year.

Her mother, Lucero Martinez, said any birthday for her daughter would have been special, but she was happy and excited when New Year's became the day.

"Its one more reason for her to celebrate," said Martinez, 18, a single stay-at-home mother. She lives in Ruskin and has a 3-year-old son.

Aileen was born at 12:33 a.m. She was 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 20.5 inches long. Dr. James Palmer of USF Health was the physician.

Martinez said she wants to make a DVD of the local news programs that came to interview her.

"I'm going to save it and show it to her," she said.

She also wanted to say: "Thank you to all the nurses that helped me that day."
