Fred's Market set to open in Riverview — finally

RIVERVIEW

For months, Fred Johnson tantalized aficionados of down-home, lip-smacking Southern cooking with talk of a new Fred's Market at the corner of Duncan Road and U.S. 301.

A new Fred's started to take shape earlier this year, but the progress was slow — excruciatingly so to some — as the target date for the opening slipped farther and farther back on the calendar.

As September came and went, and then October, a chorus of anxious Fred's regulars began to grow louder: When? Well, folks, it won't be long now. The Riverview Fred's is set to open on Saturday at 7 a.m.

Or at least that's the plan.

As of Tuesday, Fred was awaiting word from the county on when the water would get turned on and the inspectors would show up. Plus, he needed one day to run a dress rehearsal.

Yep, we've been down this road before. But considering the work that remained this week, mostly planting shrubs and setting up the dining room and other finishing work, Saturday did look doable.

Or at the very latest, Sunday.

Or maybe Monday.
