Fundraising events to fill your social calendar

Billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates issued a challenge to other supremely wealthy people this year: How about giving away half of what you're worth to charity?

A pastor in Birmingham, Ala., suggests a goal for many whose financial stature is far below that stratosphere. If you earn more than $50,000 a year, how about living at that level and giving away the rest?

And have you heard about the grass roots movement generally credited to a fellow named Dave Bruno? More than a few American families are decreasing their possessions to just 100 things.

Our faltering economy has taught us much in the past several years: gratitude for what we have, for one; sharing with those who have less, for another.

Many Tampa Bay area nonprofits are struggling to keep their doors open, and some have combined forces, even closed.

When you see the big list of fundraisers in the 14th annual Neighborhood Times Social Calendar, know that many of them are not only about good times — they're also about helping people in need.

The new year brings a number of reasons to celebrate. A highlight of early 2011 will be the opening of a new Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg and the events surrounding that milestone.

A big thank you to all of you who submitted information for the calendar, and an acknowledgment: We had some technical trials producing this issue, and we may have missed some events. If so, our apologies in advance. We'll strive to include your occasions in future issues.
