Maybe the $100 million Gates Foundation grant won't be the cure-all for the Hillsborough school district, but I applaud the district for making an aggressive effort to improve the education of our students.

Like any ambitious plan, administrators may discover areas that need to be tweaked along the way. We also need more parents to do their part at home.

I guess my affection for The Andy Griffith Show shines through these columns because on Friday, I received a comical Mayberry Union High diploma via e-mail from Harriet Browder, a member of the Chicken Thieves and Whatnot Chapter of the TAGSRWC (The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club).

It's nice to know I'm not alone.
