St. Petersburg police Chief Chuck Harmon, the longest-serving police chief in recent city history, officially retired Monday with a ceremony attended by Mayor Rick Kriseman, city staff and family members.
Harmon has been with the department for 31 years, the last 12 as chief.
Harmon, 54, announced his retirement in September. It wasn't a complete surprise — he has to retire by May 2015 because of the state's deferred retirement program.
Assistant Chief David DeKay was appointed the interim police chief by Kriseman while the city conducts a search for a new chief.
