High fives

Kentucky colonel award presented: Joseph Seyfried of Spring Hill was recently presented his official Kentucky colonel certificate by Nick Morana, a retired Army colonel and a Kentucky colonel since 1980.

Morana submitted a recommendation to Kentucky Gov. Steven L. Beshear on behalf of Seyfried for his longtime community service. Seyfried is a member of Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582, Korean War Veterans Legion 5053 and VFW Post 10209, and was a member of the now defunct Korean War Veterans Association Nature Coast Chapter 174.

Clubs and organizations

Poetry winner: Hernando County poet Larry Berube, a member of the Just Poets Club, took first place in the seventh annual poetry competition at the downtown New Port Richey Art Gallery. The club meets monthly for poetry readings and related activities. For information, call (352) 597-1113.

Sports and recreation

Golfers make birdies: At the monthly meeting of the High Point Women's Golf League, members honored women who made birdies during April.

Adding their names to the Birdie Wall were:

Pat Angeline, Phyllis O'Brien, Cecile Abbott, Cindy Williams, Joan Orr, Ann Bushey and Barb Ryan.
