Hometown Pasco for Sept. 5

Birthday wishes help two local charities: Wendy Longman, captain and owner of Windsong Charters & Boat Rentals in New Port Richey, recently made a special request of her Facebook friends for her birthday. For every “Happy Birthday” wish she received, she would donate $1 to a local charity. Within a few hours, Longman had received more than 500 wishes from friends, family, colleagues and clients. The final tally of well wishers was 642. She then asked via Facebook, for help deciding on which charity would benefit. Once again she received assistance. Longman put all the votes into a bowl and drew two names — Metropolitan Ministries in Holiday and Wheelchairs 4 Kids in Tarpon Springs — each received a check for $321. Longman hopes more small business owners will give back to the community using creative ideas and social media.
