It's not true now, but for centuries, women were mostly an unwelcome minority as artists — even into the 1980s. Thanks to collectors and donors Martha and Jim Sweeny, who took an interest in this category, the museum has a growing collection of prints by highly regarded female artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Kiki Smith and many more, whose works will be part of "Marks Made: Prints by American Women Artists From the 1960s to the Present," an exhibit running Oct. 17 through Jan. 24 at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg.
