Metro 510 housing complex an example of the greatness Tampa community can attain

Giant ceiling fans now spin in the restored St. Paul AME church, but they didn't decrease the warmth filling the historic building Wednesday at the grand opening of Metro 510, downtown's newest housing complex aimed at service workers and entry-level employees.

Led by Sage Partners president Debra Koehler, Metro 510 stands as a shining example of a public/private partnership that used stimulus money and generated more than 600 jobs. They built the new apartments around St. Paul, which will now serve as the "Life Center" for residents.

When this community decides to accomplish greatness, it can do so with tremendous style and pride. I just wish we made that decision more often. ...

I appreciate the efforts of state Sen. Mike Fasano to penalize the NFL for blacking out Bucs homes games that don't sell out, but the league always win outs, even when dealing with lawmakers and judges.

Of course, the NFL would be wise to realize the dated practice hurts the Bucs more than fans. ...

The last time I saw children's music star Laurie Berkner, my then 3-year-old daughter formed a mosh pit with little Liam Dunn in front of the stage. Now she's dancing to Katy Perry, and Liam is beating his fellow 10-year-olds at 5k races. Sigh.

So if you've got little ones, catch Berkner in concert at Ruth Eckerd Hall Dec. 18 — and hold on to the memories. Time flies. ...

Hoola For Happiness celebrates World Hoop Day — I love that name — by sharing hoops at Curtis Hixon Park from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Friday. The group spreads "God's love" by giving hoops around the world.

After reading the paper this week, there's no doubt the world needs more love.

That's all I'm saying.
