Missing 'Welcome to Key West' sign turns up 300 miles away

KEY WEST — An iconic sign welcoming Key West visitors to "Paradise U.S.A", which went missing after Hurricane Irma, has been found.

Only, it turned up 300 miles away on a dock in Fort Myers.

The "Welcome to Key West" sign greeted visitors on U.S. 1 at the island's entrance, but went missing after the storm hit Florida on Sept. 10, according to the Miami Herald.

The welcome sign, an $8,000 gift from a local Rotary Club, was last seen by residents on the ground after it had been presumably knocked down during the storm, the Herald reported.

And when it still hadn't turned up after several weeks, people began to suspect someone had swiped it.

Key West residents and officials pleaded to get their sign back and strung up a makeshift one in its place, the Herald reported.

An unidentified couple dropped off the sign early Thursday morning at the Key West Express docking station on Fort Myers Beach, about 300 miles away from its home, according to the WINK News..

The dock is used by the Key West Ferry Express, which provides regular service to the Keys and is also currently delivering supplies to hurricane victims there.

The ferry company agreed to deliver it back home, and loaded it onto the vessel before departing for the island.

Paradise has been found.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
