Naples, Fla., high school drum team wins competition in St. Pete Beach

Barron Collier High School sophomore David Zawistowski, 15, played the bass in a drum line at the first-ever Beach Battle Drum Line Competition on Friday November 21st, 2014 behind Post Card Inn, on St. Pete beach.

The Barron Collier High School drum line beat the St. Petersburg High School drum line in the competition. Though four teams originally signed up, only two were available come Friday night.

The bands performed two rounds, face-to-face, before a panel of judges. They also held a solo round, where two drummers faced off. The audience decided the winner, resulting in a tie. Bands from four other Florida high schools came to watch, as well as friends and family. After the competition, the high schoolers were treated to a bonfire and beach dance party.

The competition was held the night before the Florida Marching Band Championships finals. The finals are Saturday November 22nd at Tropicana Field, tickets are $20.
