NEW PORT RICHEY — Douglas Hockenberry might be out of work soon, but his bank account will be doing okay.
Hockenberry, 54, of New Port Richey, won this week's Millionaire Raffle, a special weekly drawing by the Florida Lottery in which one person gets $1 million and 50 others get $1,000 apiece.
"This couldn't have come at a better time for my wife and me," said Hockenberry, who recently learned he would be laid off at the end of December due to his employer downsizing. "I had to check the ticket multiple times to even believe what I was seeing. It's hard to believe that you can be in the depths of despair one week and a million dollar winner the next."
Hockenberry served 28 years in the U.S. Army before working eight years for his current employer, whom he did not name. He purchased his winning ticket at the Publix at 5127 U.S. 19.
And while he and his wife, Kathy, have put all the money in the bank, Hockenberry said he plans to spend some of it on a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle he's been eyeing for about a year.
There are two weekly drawings remaining in the 25th Anniversary Millionaire Raffle, plus a grand prize drawing on Dec. 31 in which the winner will get $2 million and 560 others will win prizes ranging from $1,000 to $100,000.
