The clock was ticking toward midnight on New Year's Eve, and the babies were ready for delivery at Tampa General Hospital. Two mothers, three babies. Which baby would be the first born in 2010?

The babies

Margarita Robels is the first to give birth. She delivers twin boys via emergency caesarean section. The first is Marcello, who was delivered at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31. The second is Stephano, who arrives just after the stroke of midnight. It's Jan. 1, 2010. Marcello is 2 pounds, 4 ounces and 15 1/2 inches long. Stephano is 2 pounds, 4 ounces and 15 inches long. Then, just 20 seconds after midnight, Isamarie Duran gives birth to her daughter, Zurina Vazquez. Zurina is 6 pounds, 9 ounces and was 19 inches long.

So who was first?

Tampa General Hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss said the births were so close — just a few seconds apart — that the hospital is honoring both Stephano Velasco and Zurina Vazquez as the first babies of 2010 in Hillsborough County.
