Promise of new horizons and second chances

One student in Hillsborough Community College's Hope Scholars program longs to be an engineer. Another strives to obtain an audio engineering degree and work as a DJ.

But the most moving words from my meeting with the group last week came from a student with a 3.5 grade point average dealing with the stigma of being a felon. He has applied to Florida International University but has run into challenges because of his record. In a nation built on second chances, he deserves one. …

John Mays teamed with three partners 14 years ago to open a new restaurant on Fourth Street N in St. Petersburg. Bonefish Grill has grown into a huge success, and Mays has come full circle. He's opening a new restaurant in June at 8300 Fourth St. N called Noble Crust. Mays promises a mix of Southern and Italian cuisine emphasizing farm-to-table freshness. Kudos to courageous teen Kyle Peters, who capped off the American Cancer Society's stellar Cattle Barons' Ball in Sarasota Friday with a moving speech.
