Latitude, longitude and distance

How many miles are there between degrees of latitude and longitude?

This is a timely question as we move into the busiest part of the hurricane season. Latitude lines are those going east and west. There are about 69 miles between each degree of latitude. Most hurricane maps show latitude lines every 5 degrees, so it's about 345 miles between those lines.

Longitude lines go north and south. On hurricane maps the lines look parallel but they aren't really because they meet at the poles. So at the equator the distance between degrees of longitude is about 69 miles, but by the time you get to 40 degrees north (in about the middle of New Jersey) or south (around Argentina), the distance shrinks to about 53 miles.

Mail delivery six days a week

The U.S. Postal Service is having to consider options for reducing expenses, one of which is cutting weekend (Saturday) mail delivery. How many countries, other than the United States, offer Monday-Saturday home delivery?

The U.S. Postal Service, Postal Regulatory Commission and Universal Postal Union, a U.N. agency, have done some research into this, but there's no complete list. Data from a June Congressional Research Service report shows that France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have six-day delivery while New Zealand charges additional fees for Saturday delivery.

Getting a message to Patty Duke

Can you tell me how to reach Patty Duke? After watching The Miracle Worker, I consider that movie in my top five favorite movies.

You can contact Patty Duke and ask her questions via the Patty Duke Online Center for Mental Wellness site at www.pattyduke.net.

On the home page, you can select "Ask Patty Duke," which will send comments to the actor, born Anna Marie Duke. She was 16 when she won an Oscar for her portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker.

Harmon's history as Gibbs

Do you know which season and episodes of JAG introduced Leroy Jethro Gibbs and the rest of the NCIS crew? Is Angie Harmon Mark Harmon's sister?

Gibbs, played by Harmon, and several other future NCIS stars first appeared in a two-part telecast of JAG called Meltdown and Ice Queen in April 2003, the show's eighth season. NCIS premiered the following September.

Mark Harmon is not related to Angie Harmon. He is the son of football legend Tom Harmon and actor Elyse Knox, and the brother of actors Kelly Harmon and Kris Harmon; Kris Harmon was married to the late Rick Nelson.
