Q&A: Opera singer Michael Amante's wife died at 47, leaving 3 small children

'I sing my way through this' loss

At a concert held recently at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Michael Amante announced to the audience that his beloved wife had passed away a few weeks earlier. He is now a widower with three children under the age of 9. Do you know what she died from and her age? I believe she was a physician. Also, does he plan to continue touring?

Opera tenor Michael Amante's wife died unexpectedly on Dec. 28. Dr. Seema Ramcharitar-Amante, 47, was the victim of a hemorrhage. Amante said she had been on blood thinners due to clotting issues.

Ramcharitar-Amante was a podiatrist practicing in New York City. She and her husband have two daughters, Giana and Grace, and a son, Luca. "I have three young children," Amante said in an interview, "and now I am more aware of how important my role as a parent is, it's humbling."

Amante, who performed at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater on Feb. 18, is in the midst of a tour that continues through June 19. "I sing my way through this, because that is what I do," Amante said. "I sang to her before, and I sing to her now. I know she'd want me to continue doing this."

Amante has been called "the people's tenor" and the "prince of high C's" for his ability to hit and maintain the high notes. The legendary Tony Bennett refers to him as "the next Mario Lanza."

According to his website (www.michaelamante.com), Amante has a four-octave range and can sing in a variety of languages, including English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Latin and Polish.

L.A. 'built for film and television'

I believe that most one-hour situation TV shows are shot in Hollywood. Would that be true of Good Wife (set in Chicago), Mentalist (Sacramento), NCIS (Washington, D.C)., CSI (Las Vegas), and so forth?

Most television shows are filmed in Los Angeles, with set designers and location staffers doing their best to mimic the location where the series is supposed to be. Why? Because that's where most of the sets and production workers are.

"L.A. was built for film and television — it is like Detroit for cars," Ilene S. Landress, an executive producer of The Sopranos and a co-executive producer of Girls, told the New York Times.

Of the shows you list, NCIS, Mentalist and CSI are shot primarily in and around the Los Angeles area. The Good Wife is not; it is filmed in New York.

Other prominent shows shot in the Los Angeles area, though set elsewhere: Mad Men (New York), Grey's Anatomy (Seattle), Glee (Lima, Ohio), It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Philadelphia), House (New Jersey) and How I Met Your Mother (New York).

Interestingly, in a role reversal for a show about a role reversal, Drop Dead Diva is set in Los Angeles but filmed in Peachtree City, Ga.

  2. AARP study explores the role 50-plus moviegoers play at the box office

    Life Times

A new study shows that seniors have a much larger impact on the success — or failure — of a film than previously realized, even films that might seem aimed at a much younger audience.

According to the study, more than 30 percent of all cinema visits were made by 50-plus adults.

Now that college football watch list season is over (I think), here's one takeaway you probably already knew: Tampa Bay produces a lot of great athletes.

Robinson High produuct Byron Pringle has gone from this performance in a high school all-star game to all-Big 12 at Kansas State.
