Q&A: Since last year, 166 banks, 16 credit unions have failed

Failed: 166 banks, 16 credit unions

Approximately 150 commercial banks in the United States have failed during the current financial crisis. How many credit unions in the United States have failed during the same period?

From the beginning of 2009 through March 10, 2010, 166 commercial banks have failed, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Twenty-six of those have been in 2010.

In that same period, according to the National Credit Union Association, 16 credit unions have failed. Fifteen of those happened in 2009.

National anthem and sports

Where did the practice of singing the national anthem before sporting events originate?

There are reports of Francis Scott Key's Star-Spangled Banner being played at professional baseball games as early as 1897, and regularly during games at some fields a year later.

In the 1918 World Series, when the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs, the anthem was played during the seventh-inning stretches.

During World War II, according to Sports Illustrated, the anthem began to be played before every baseball game. And now it's played before every professional baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer game, and NASCAR event.

Will Patton has long resume

Seems like Will Patton is in a lot of movies I've seen. Can you tell me a little about him?

Patton is a versatile character actor who is in a whole lot of movies. Among them: Silkwood (1983), Desperately Seeking Susan and After Hours (1985), No Way Out (1987), The Client (1994), The Postman (1997), Armageddon (1998), Gone in Sixty Seconds and Remember the Titans (2000), The Mothman Prophecies (2002), A Mighty Heart (2007) and Brooklyn's Finest (2009).

He has also appeared in TV series CSI: Las Vegas, 24, Numb3rs, The Agency, VR.5 and the soap operas Search for Tomorrow and Ryan's Hope.

Patton, 55, is the oldest son of a Lutheran minister and grew up on a farm near Charleston, S.C. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and has done more than 40 plays on Broadway. He has been in a relationship for more than 10 years with actor Alison Elliot, 39, best known for her role in 2007's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

When Patton was young, his parents ran a foster home for wayward teens. Every Saturday night, the boys put on plays.

"I must have been about 5 years old," Patton told the New York Times. "I don't know what they were doing, but they brought me out on stage. And I had on this little hula skirt, and women's eye makeup, and something done to my hair. And I remember the whole house full of juvenile delinquents and me both having this moment of ecstasy. I think that's where it all went wrong.''

  4. In fear and vigilance, a Tampa neighborhood holds its breath

TAMPA — There was a time, not long ago, when Wayne Capaz would go for a stroll at night and Christina Rodriguez would shop whenever she wanted. Michael Fuller would go to his night job as a line cook, not too worried about his wife at home.

More than 50 people gathered and walked in the Southeast Seminole Heights community Friday to pay respects to the victims of three shootings. The crowd took a moment of silence at the corner of 11th Street and East New Orleans where Monica Hoffa was found dead. [JONATHAN CAPRIEL | Times]
  5. Fennelly: What's not to like about Lightning's start?

    Lightning Strikes

BRANDON — No one is engraving the Stanley Cup. No one has begun stuffing the league MVP ballot box for Nikita Kucherov.

The Lightning, with a win tonight, would match the best start in franchise history, 7-1-1 in the 2003-04 Cup season.
