Scholarships for Military Children program presents $1,500 award to daughter of Palm Harbor woman

Brittany Curtin, daughter of Jacqylyn Twitty of Palm Harbor, is a recipient of a $1,500 college scholarship awarded at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Va., through the Scholarships for Military Children Program.

Curtin's school and community activities include the Navigators, National Honor Society, Marine Biology Club and volunteering with Hospice. She is enrolled at the University of South Florida.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was initiated in 2000 for graduating high school seniors or college-enrolled students who maintained a 3.0 GPA, participated in voluntary school and community activities, demonstrated leadership qualities and submitted an essay on a selected topic.

The program is open to qualified sons and daughters of members of the U.S. armed services, including active duty, retirees, guard/reserves, as well as children of deceased military personnel. Applications are turned in through commissaries. Funding is provided by manufacturers and organizations that do business with the commissary system.

Curtin's scholarship at Fort Eustis was funded by Sargento Foods.

Beccah Clark of Clearwater has been selected to be the associate producer of operations for Gator Growl 2012 at the University of Florida. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville.

A UF tradition for nearly 90 years, Gator Growl is a showcase of athletic talent and spirited tradition with fireworks, light displays, live music and comedy.

Clark, a political science major, was the director of hospitality for Gator Growl in 2011 and an assistant director of hospitality in 2010. She is a graduate of Countryside High in Clearwater.

Since enrolling at UF, Clark has devoted herself to campus involvement. She was inducted into the Florida Blue Key honor society in December 2011; served in student government as a student senator and a cabinet staff member in community and political affairs; was a member of the honor court and a dance marathon public relations captain in 2011; held the title of vice president of operations and the external public relations chair of her sorority, Kappa Delta, and also served as a Florida Greek Ambassador.

In addition to her involvement on campus, Clark was a head marketing intern for 101 Management Group in Gainesville, where she helped develop marketing plans for the popular 101 Cantina and 101 Downtown restaurants.

Gator Growl has been recognized by many popular culture outlets, featured performances by some of the biggest names in comedy and showcased cameos from presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Gator Growl marks the culmination of UF's homecoming festivities and brings together students, alumni, staff and faculty. This year's show will feature an American theme in honor of Veterans Day.
