Students at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg have been playing Santa's elves this holiday season, from volunteering to gift drives.

On Friday, they brought bags and bags of gifts into their gymnasium to help more than 200 needy children have a better Christmas.

Waiting to receive the gifts were Guardian ad Litem caseworkers, who will distribute the hundreds of presents to needy families. The items included bicycles, household appliances, toys and clothing and were gathered by the students and their families.

Shorecrest has an extensive community service program in which every student participates and is the only Pinellas County group who serves the Guardian ad Litem.
