The season is off to a start as strawberry farmers began planting last week in eastern Hillsborough County. At Simmons Farms in Plant City, grower Billy Simmons hoped some harvesting could begin in November. About 350,000 Radiant variety strawberries will be planted on one 19-acre field. Among the varieties of berries Simmons will plant is a new one, Florida Sensation, which is supposed to yield a firmer, bigger berry. He'll also plant a variety aptly named Festival. The 79th annual 2014 Florida Strawberry Festival is set for Feb. 27 to March 9 in Plant City. their new home.
