TAMPA — Dentist Randall Diez says he's no millionaire, but he's done all right over the past 26 years. So he decided to use his work skills to help.
His project: A $39 special for a dental exam, cleaning and full set of X-rays — and he'll donate the proceeds to Metropolitan Ministries, which serves the homeless.
That routine work typically would cost well over $200.
"It's a little way of giving back," said Diez, 50, a married Tampa native with three children. His General & Cosmetic Dentistry has two locations, one on Kennedy Boulevard and one on Gunn Highway.
Diez has been giving "Let's Help" cards to his patients, asking them to pass them along to their friends without dental insurance. New patients can pick up a card at the office and set an appointment.
The project began a few weeks ago and ends June 30, though he said he might extend the deadline depending on the need. So far, he said, he has treated about 30 patients through the program.
He said he hopes the people who turn out for the deal are those who are uninsured or don't have the money to pay for a regular dental visit. But he won't turn away anybody who requests the card.
Diez said he's not putting a limit on the number of patients he'll see as part of the Let's Help project.
"It's a way of giving back and to be honest with you, when I look at my schedule every day," he said, "I love seeing new people on there."
