Texas inmates donate $53,000 to Hurricane Harvey victims

After Hurricane Harvey struck Texas in late August, inmates in the Lone Star State decided to do something to help the relief effort.

And help, they did.

According to state officials, inmates in Texas donated more than $53,000 from their commissary money toward Hurricane Harvey victims last month.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice wrote in a Facebook post that thousands of incarcerated offenders across multiple prisons used some of their money to donate to the American Red Cross.

More than 6,600 inmates donated a total of $53,863 from their limited commissary funds, which inmates typically use to buy items such as toiletries and snacks, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Jason Clark, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman, told the outlet that inmates were inspired on their own.

"It's just something they chose to do," Clark said. "They were requesting to donate money."

Clark says that while the average individual donation was around $8, some inmates contributed hundreds of dollars.
