BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University Journalism honored six distinguished alumni Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., including Tampa Bay Times editor of editorials Tim Nickens.

Nickens, who earned a bachelor of arts from IU in 1982, was selected for his influential career in the journalism field and his contribution to IU student media while he was a student.

In 2013, Nickens and columnist Daniel Ruth won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing for a series of editorials that prompted Pinellas County officials to restore fluoride to the water supply. Nickens was awarded the 2013 Scripps Howard Foundation's Walker Stone Award for his editorial writing during the previous year.

During his time at IU, Nickens worked as editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student, IU's independent student newspaper.

That's also where he met his wife, Bridget.

Before he worked on the editorial board at the Times, Nickens was metro editor and assistant managing editor.
