Zombies will roam the University of South Florida from noon to 2 p.m. today to collect canned food and monetary donations for Metropolitan Ministries.
Deon Blackwell, an adjunct instructor in the USF School of Art & Art History, provides zombie makeup and a costuming workshop for the group of volunteers that includes students from the art department.
He uses zombies as part of a class to teach contemporary art — including painting, sculpture and film — during October.
He started the food drive four years ago after donating to Metropolitan Ministries' holiday food drives.
"Every year we try to do more and more for them, so that's the community assistance part of the project," he said.
Volunteers will start at Cooper Hall and stop at major buildings on campus, ending at the Marshall Center. Boxes to collect canned goods were placed in major departments on campus and will be picked up today.
Zombies collected about 200 cans and $100 last year. "Every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger," Blackwell said. "Last year was probably the biggest we had."
The Metropolitan Ministries donation center at 2101 N Florida Ave. is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. More holiday drive dropoff spots will open in the next few weeks. For a list of locations, visit metromin.org.
