In Gainesville, Tom Petty memorialized on 34th Street wall

GAINESVILLE — Gainesville's No. 1 son.

That's what Tom Petty is to his hometown, and now he's been memorialized on one of its most iconic walls.

The SW 34th Street wall is recognizable by the varying shades of spray-painted images and messages, many of which have been repainted dozens of times over the years. The only one that has remained untouched bears the names of the Gainesville students killed by Danny Rolling in 1990. On Tuesday, a painted tribute to Petty appeared beside it.

Petty died Monday night after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 66.

A bright red heart with an arrow that doubles as a guitar, the logo of Petty's band the Heartbreakers, is drawn at the center. The mural, stamped with stars and hearts, reads: "love you always."

In red spray paint, scrawled at the bottom: "Thanks Tommy."
