Hooper: Make a choice — ‘No We Can’t’ or ‘Watch This’

Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano often speaks about how the airport, and really Tampa Bay, enjoys new success because it’s gone from, No We Can’t to Watch This.

It’s an attitude we need to continue to embrace. On Friday, the Hillsborough County School Board said it will move to place a half-cent, 10-year local sales tax on the Nov. 6 ballot. A 1-cent sales tax for transportation improvements also will be on the November ballot.

The initial reaction from many: No you can’t.

But let’s take a deep breath, study both initiatives and make a clear decision. I’m not endorsing either, yet, but I am arguing we need to allow the possibility of passing both, and strive to not pit one against the other.

If we conclude both will put this county in a better place, let’s stand and say, "Watch this." ...

Ruth Eckerd Hall CEO Zev Buffman says Clearwater should distinguish itself in the market with a new bandshell venue featuring covered seating. Imagine Clearwater plans don’t call for that, but I think a design could include future provisions for such a covering as funding grows. ...

Wait. SNL star Kenan Thompson is a part-time Tampa resident? Call me crazy, but I’m more excited about having a brush with greatness with Thompson than running into former Yankee Derek Jeter. ...

Sen. John McCain’s legacy will live on as an independent voice and remarkable profile in courage. As our political discourse continues to fray, he will continue to serve as a respectful example for all Americans. And he taught us much in nearly 82 years on this planet.

That’s all I’m saying.
