LARGO — When Largo Public Library Director Casey McPhee received a phone call from the president of the Florida Library Association this month, she was prepared to hear that she was going to be assigned to a committee.
So, when she checked her messages, she was thrilled to hear the real reason for the call.
"She said library of the year, and I was so elated," she said.
McPhee had just been informed that the Largo Library had been named the association’s 2018 Library of the Year, and she couldn’t wait to share the news.
She saved the message and played it for everyone at the managers’ meeting she was attending at City Hall.
"It never got old – no matter how many times I played it for people," she said. "So that was pretty special."
Nancy Brockman, chairwoman of the FLA Awards committee, said the library was chosen because of its focus on community building, outreach and partnership, which resulted in greater relevancy in the programs and services offered.
