Annexation would help Zephyrhills airport expansion

ZEPHYRHILLS — City officials took the first step Monday night toward annexing 42 acres for a possible runway expansion at the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport.

The acreage off Chancey and Tucker roads, at the north end of the airport, consists of two vacant parcels: 17.5 acres the city purchased in May from Acme Development Corporation, and 24.5 acres owned by Acme.

City Council members voted on the two annexation petitions as one measure. It comes back for a final vote Sept. 12.

While there is no plan now for a runway expansion, that could change as a consultant creates the Airport Master Plan, City Manager Jim Drumm said. The city has other airport improvement plans on the drawing board or in the works, including new runway lighting, parking lot paving, rehabilitating the runways and building a new terminal. The city hopes the amenities will help lure more air traffic to the airport.
