PINELLAS PARK

Water agency survives session of legislature

Voters are stuck with the Pinellas Park Water Management District for at least one more year.

A bill by state Rep. Janet Long, D-Seminole, that could have resulted in the agency's being dismantled never made it through the Legislature. But Long has said she plans to reintroduce it next year.

The bill would have given voters a chance to decide if they wanted to continue the agency or have it shut down. The water management district was formed about 30 years ago to solve drainage issues in parts of Pinellas Park, Lealman, St. Petersburg and Kenneth City.

Residents in the unincorporated Lealman area and the Bayou Club have in recent years lobbied hard to get out from under the district, which is funded with property taxes.

Activists in those areas say they see no benefit from the district for the money they've put into it.
