CLEARWATER — The first phase of a water treatment update will take place from Monday through April 24 and will impact Pinellas County and Clearwater utilities customers.

The routine maintenance measure is designed to optimize water quality by changing from chloramines to chlorine disinfection, according to a news release.

Customers may notice a difference in taste and/or odor, but the water will continue to meet federal and state drinking standards, according to city officials.

Pinellas County Utilities uses chloramines and periodically switches to chlorine for a short period to maintain system water quality. The county switched to chloramines in 2002 to ensure compliance with Environmental Protection Agency standards.
