LARGO — A dog at the Pinellas County Animal Services shelter was euthanized Friday after testing positive for parvovirus, a highly contagious disease that can be fatal for dogs.

The dog was being held in the adoption area of the shelter at 12450 Ulmerton Road and euthanized to protect the rest of the animals, which is standard protocol, a county news release said. All dogs in the adoption area will be re-vaccinated for the virus and quarantined for 10 days. Staff cleaned the area along with sidewalks, play yards and the lobby.

New adoption candidates will be placed in a separate building and will be ready for adoption starting on Monday.

Parvo affects dogs' gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct contact with other dogs, contaminated stool, surfaces or people, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting and severe diarrhea.
