TAMPA — Backers of a proposal to create an elected Hillsborough County mayor are asking the Florida Supreme Court to put the measure back on the November ballot.
The group Elected County Mayor Political Committee is asking the court to overturn two lower court rulings knocking the question off the ballot. The lower courts said the group improperly called for holding the first mayoral election this year, an impossibility since voters haven't decided whether to create the position.
The prospective date for a mayoral election was included when supporters of the initiative first tried to get it on the ballot in 2006. They didn't change the date when that effort failed and they shifted their effort to the 2008 election.
