Hillsborough property tax rate won't go up in 2016

TAMPA — Hillsborough County commissioners voted Thursday to leave the property tax rate unchanged for 2016.

Tampa residents will pay a countywide millage rate of 5.7960, or $5.79 for every $1,000 in property value. The millage rate for unincorporated Hillsborough County will be 10.7547, the same as it was in 2015.

Even without a rate change, Hillsborough expects to bring in more revenue next year, thanks to rising property values and a growing tax base. That means that even without a rate hike, property owners whose home values have risen will see a tax increase.

The county's proposed budget estimated $654 million in property tax revenue in 2016, a $38 million increase from 2015.

The rate can still be lowered before the county finalizes its budget in September, but commissioners cannot vote to raise it any higher.

The board voted 6-1 to keep the rate at current levels. Commissioner Al Higginbotham was the lone dissenter.
