The job
Kenneth City has a council-as-manager form of government in which each of four council members has immediate oversight of the day-to-day operations of a town department. The mayor has charge of the day-to-day operations of the town. The mayor serves a three-year term and earns $500 a month. The council meets at least once a month. Kenneth City has about 4,900 residents and an operating budget of about $2.2 million.
The candidates
Joanne DeSimone,67. Background: She was born in New York and raised in Valley Stream, on Long Island. She worked in the fashion industry as a buyer representing retail clothing stores across the U.S. She moved to Florida in 1979 and moved to Kenneth City in 2003. She is retired. She is single. Qualifications: She has served on the Kenneth City Town Council since 2010, in charge of the department of public buildings and recreation. She is a former Redington Beach city commissioner in charge of the finance and building departments and served on that town's planning board. Source of income: Council salary. Assets: Condominium. Teresa Zemaitis, 43. Background: She is a native of Queens, N.Y., and moved to Kenneth City in 1996. She has a bachelor's degree in literature from Eckerd College, where she graduated summa cum laude. She has been a legal secretary and a managing editor of a community newspaper, and she teaches 10th-grade reading at Dixie Hollins High School.
