Largo considers smoking ban for city employees

LARGO — A majority of commissioners told city staffers at a Tuesday work session to draw up plans to make it against policy for city workers to smoke when they're on the clock and give hiring preference to nonsmokers — mostly to reduce insurance costs. When it comes to the public, commissioners reached a consensus to let individuals make their own choices, but decided to put up signs near children's play areas on city property to discourage smoking.

City human resources Director Susan Sinz said a tobacco-free workplace would eventually save Largo about $400,000 per year in insurance costs.
