Much-criticized Regent board requests county involvement in Riverview events center

RIVERVIEW — In a letter Tuesday, the Regent's board chair asked the Hillsborough County Commission to appoint people to help run the controversial Riverview events center.

The letter also suggests having a commissioner serve on the non-profit Regent board, which is known as the Brandon Community Advantage Center.

The call for county involvement — a significant attempt to open up a board criticized for its lack of community accessibility — did not mention the reimbursement of $35,000 in misspent money requested by commissioners in September. The letter follows a query Friday from the county's chief financial administrator asking for further explanations of the board's financial records

Scrutiny of the Regent's construction has revealed some questionable spending of nearly $7 million in public dollars.
