New development coming to Ulmerton Road and 66th Street

LARGO — The last piece of industrial land on Ulmerton Road in the city is about to be turned into a commercial property.

City commissioners have tentatively approved a change that would clear the way for a fast-food restaurant and a gas station to be built on Ulmerton Road at 66th Street.

To pave the way for the project, commissioners on Jan. 6 unanimously agreed to change the land use designation on 11 parcels on the northwest corner of Ulmerton and 66th from industrial to commercial. The property, totaling about 3.6 acres, is the last industrial land on Ulmerton in the city.

The acreage is under a purchase contract by SunCoast Retail Developers, based in Treasure Island. SunCoast was founded in May 2013, according to Florida corporate records, and specializes in retail development and brokerage.

The change, if finally approved, will clear the way for the 11 parcels to be combined into three larger pieces. One of those is expected to house a fast-food restaurant. Another, retail development. And the third, a gas station. It's unclear which businesses would eventually locate there.

The land is the site of the former LKQ Auto Parts Supply, which moved to another location. Several vacant warehouses are still on the property.

Largo staff members say the proposed change will bring the type of property more into line with the rest of that intersection. A Bank of America is on the northeast corner. A Mobil gas station/convenience store is on the southwest corner and a Walgreens is at the southeast corner.
