NEW PORT RICHEY — An idea to generate revenue by allowing alcohol at events at the city-owned recreation center has been squashed.
Mayor Bob Consalvo said at a work session Tuesday that council member decided that allowing alcohol at events in the center did not fit with the facility's mission of being a family-driven endeavor.
The city for years has been looking at numerous measures to drum up business at the recreation center, which has lost money since its opening in 2007. But allowing alcohol in the facility has never been the solution for Consalvo.
"I've always been against it. It's a wonderful facility that's always been known to be a great place for families," he said.
