Dog adoptions on hold due to virus
Pasco County's animal shelter will remain closed for dog adoptions through July 15 after three more dogs tested positive for parvovirus.
Officials halted dog adoptions late last month after an outbreak. Those animals were euthanized, but because the virus can incubate for up to 12 days, officials said dog adoptions would be discontinued through July 9. On Tuesday, they said the additional cases mean adoptions can't resume for another week.
Dogs taken in by the shelter are examined and vaccinated for parvovirus. Anyone who has adopted a dog from the Land O'Lakes shelter in the last 18 days and notices symptoms of the virus — vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea — should contact their veterinarian and the shelter at (727) 834-3480.
The facility remains open for adopting cats and kittens, which are not typically susceptible to parvovirus.
