Pasco County okays five-year plan of transportation improvements

NEW PORT RICHEY — Pasco officials on Thursday signed off on a $227 million to-do list of transportation improvements over the next five years.

The Pasco Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is made up of officials from the county and the cities, approved the plan for projects eligible for state and federal funding after a public hearing that featured no speakers.

The plan, which has been in the works since December, includes big-money items such as $33 million to widen Interstate 75 in Wesley Chapel, as well as smaller ticket ones, like $62,700 for a sidewalk for River Ridge Middle School students walking along Moon Lake Road from Ridge Road to Randee Road.

Other projects include:

• Just under $500,000 for a sidewalk on Little Road for Seven Springs Middle School students. That project is expected to start this fall, officials said Thursday.

• $9 million in 2011-12 to add left-turn lanes and improve the median on U.S. 19 between Marine Parkway and Hernando County.

• $13.5 million in 2011-12 to add right-turn lanes on U.S. 19 from Marine Parkway to State Road 52.

• $5 million in 2013-14 to widen U.S. 301 from Geiger Road to the Dade City bypass.

The list also lays out priorities for future state-funded projects.

Topping the highway list is adding right-turn lanes on U.S. 19 from Pinellas to Hernando counties; acquiring right-of-way for the widening of SR 52; widening County Road 54 and State Road 54; and the Ridge Road Extension.

Top enhancement projects include the addition of restrooms and shelters at the North Suncoast and SR 54 trailhead; sidewalks on U.S. 19 and U.S. 301; and a sidewalk on Dean Dairy Road, from SR 54 to Eiland Boulevard.

On the transit list are plans to implement a Moon Lake bus route in 2012; increase frequency on existing routes by 2016; add Sunday service and implement a Wesley Chapel route after 2018.
