Longtime Pasco tax collector Mike Olson dies at 68

Mike Olson, Pasco County's longtime tax collector, died Wednesday night while in hospice care.

Family spokesman Clyde Hobby said Olson, 68, died about 9 p.m. Olson had suffered a stroke on Sunday and was moved into hospice care on Wednesday, Hobby said.

Hobby said funeral arrangements are pending. Michels & Lundquist Funeral Home in New Port Richey is in charge of arrangements.

Olson was elected in 1981, making him Florida's longest-serving tax collector.

Before that, he served a term on the County Commission from 1974 to 1980.

He was the only Democrat currently holding countywide office in Pasco.

Olson was a Pasco County native who graduated from Gulf High School in New Port Richey.

His late mother, Mittye P. Locke, has an elementary school named after her.
