Pinellas plans to demolish uninhabitable homes

Pinellas County commissioners on Tuesday approved demolishing three buildings and foreclosing on another house whose owners have amassed huge fines for not keeping their property in good repair.

The properties slated for demolition are all in the unincorporated Lealman area. And all, county officials say, are in such bad state that no one can live in them.

"They were not only uninhabited, they were uninhabitable," Commissioner Nancy Bostock said.

One home, 4550 39th St. N, has amassed $2.3 million in fines. Another, at 5046 37th St. N, has a code lien of about $462,000 on the property. The third, 4624 24th St. N, has a total of about $373,000 in fines.

The house slated for foreclosure is at 1216 Norwood St. in the unincorporated Clearwater area. The house has a sinkhole, which has been stabilized, in the middle. The code lien totals nearly $463,000.
